Firefly / Serenity

Ok, So I have recently watched the movie Serenity, which made me start watching the TV show Firefly again. And I must say if you haven't seen either of these then you're missing out.
I never watched the show when it was on TV, in fact a lot of people didn't since it got canceled shortly after airing, but it has to be one of the most underrated shows out there and has developed quite the cult following. If you're a fan of anything Joss Wheadon has done, but you haven't seen this yet, then you need to, and you'll love it. The way old west aspects are weaved together with space ships and the future is wonderfully done. Anyways I'm not very good and describing these things..so here's some YouTube videos to help..

The Other Guys

I saw The Other Guys on Saturday, right after seeing Cirque Du Soleil, which was awesome btw, and man was this the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. Keep in mind that the type of comedy in this movie is the ridiculous kind, it's like the director said to the actors "this is the basic plot of the movie, and I want to make this as ridiculous as possible"

I give this comedy a 9 out of 10

While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

The Last Airbender - Movie Review

My Summary: There are 4 tribes. Water, Earth, Air and Fire. In each there are benders, a person that can control that element. There is what they call an Avatar, he can control all 4 elements and he is there to balance the elements in their world. The Avatar had been missing for a 100 years and the Fire nation had declared war on the other nations and mostly in control. Ong the Avatar is finally awoken after being stuck under some ice for a 100 years (not sure how he survived that, but ok) he has learned Air bending but doesn't know how to control the rest of the elements since he is just a child and hasn't completed his training. Ong and some friends go to the Water tribe so he can learn Water bending. The Fire nation is hot on their trail. Will Ong be able to defeat the Fire nation and bring balance back into the world?

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this movie, but I definitely think it's not for everyone. I would say if you liked the DragonBall Evolution movie that came out last year, you'd probably enjoy this. The visuals were great as were the martial arts scenes, very fluid and just nice to watch. Some parts where a little hard to follow, but overall the story was ok. It was nice to see Jackson Rathbone (Jasper from Twilight) in a bigger roll. His hair still left something to be desired though. Kids would probably like this movie more than adults since it is based off of a kids anime show, so expect that silliness that comes from anime tv.

I give this movie 5.85 out of 10

Star Wars In Concert

So, we always have raffles at my work for charity and they had one recently for father's day, where the prizes were things father's might enjoy. They had a bunch of things up for grabs but one of the things was tickets to Star Wars In Concert. In case you don't know what that is, it's basically an orchestra that plays the score from the movies while clips play on a screen. A friend of mine at work actually won the tickets, she was hoping to win something else since she nor anyone she knew was interested in going, so she gave the tickets to me! Free tickets were pretty sweet! Anyways my husband and I went to see the show last night, it was pretty good, but I don't think it would have been worth it to pay for it, while it might have been had the tickets been close to the stage, but we were really far back and we couldn't see very well. Oh well, it was still a fun night out.

Daybreakers Movie Review, No Glittery Vampires Need Apply

I had actually posted this review a while ago on my book blog before I started my movie blog, but I just watched this movie again last night and I thought I would post this on my official movie blog :)
Daybreakers
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill

Premise: In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.

My Thoughts: Now this a vampire movie! It holds true to most of the standard vampire myths pre-twilight. Vampires burn in the sun so their society sticks to the night, and since most of the world has been taken over by vampires and very few humans exist the roles of night and day have been reversed completely. Instead of regular sidewalks they have "subwalks" an underground tunnel system to access during the day.
This movie to me is what would happen if there really were vampires, I think it would spread and spread until humans were all but extinct and the decisions they make in the movie is pretty close to how I think people would act in a situation such as this so I found the plot very believable, well as believable as a vampire movie can get.
The fashion is this movie is awesome. All the vampires dress in a sort of 40's inspired look and the hair and clothing is all very elegant and classy. I find a lot of movies that take place in the near future adopt this look as the 40s inspired such clean lines and suits generally never go out of style so it doesn't date the movie.
Now onto the eyes. The eyes are amber coloured on all the vampires and it was exceptionally well done. It's what the eyes should have looked like in Twilight. There is this one scene where all these vampires are waiting for the subway train and the tunnel goes dark as a train passes and all you see are the eyes, very spooky.

Now this movie is rated 18A in Canada, and I'm pretty sure it's rated R in the US, so this is definitely not a kids movie, it's quite violent and I would recommend this to adults only.

Overall I thought it was really well done. I give this a 8 out of 10.

Side Note: The main character's name is in fact Edward, and I've been getting a little annoyed at people who say "oh they copied Twilight" etc. I just wanted to state this couldn't be true. The screenplay for the movie Daybreakers was written in 2004 well before Twilight was released, also the movie was actually filmed and completed in 2007 before the Twilight phenomenon reached its peak. I'm not sure why it took so long before Daybreakers was released in theatres, it may have had to do with the budget or distributors or something I know nothing about, but the writers did not copy anything from Twilight and any similarities are therefore coincidental.

The Accidental Husband - Review

The Accidental Husband
Released 2008
Starring:
Uma Thurman, Colin Firth, Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Summary:
Emma (Uma Thurman) is a radio talk show host giving relationship advice, she is gaining popularity and is close to getting married to Richard (Colin Firth) who is also the publisher of her upcoming book. Patrick (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is just a regular guy who is also about to get married until his girlfriend Sophia calls in for advice to Dr Emma. Emma's advice results in Patrick and Sophia's break up and Patrick wants a little pay back. Patrick sees Emma is about to get married in a magazine article, so with the help of his friend they hack the marriage records online and make it so Patrick and Emma are married. So when Emma and Richard go to city hall to get their marriage certificate they tell her she is already married to Patrick. Emma thinks it just a clerical error so she goes to see Patrick to get it annulled. Patrick distracts Emma from getting the annulment to torture her a bit but he ends up falling for her. Emma has growing feelings for Patrick as well, but when she finds out what Patrick did who will she decide to marry in the end? Patrick or Richard?

I loved this movie, I hadn't really see much about it and I watched it on a whim. I'm so glad I did. I love all the main characters in this movie. Especially that very handsome Jeffrey Dean Morgan. This movie was just plain fun and I highly recommend it for a girls night. Get the facials and pedicures going and pop this one in for sure!

I give it 8 out of 10

Splice - Movie Review

So I saw Splice last night. And I sum up the movie in two words: Messed. Up. In a weird, good way, but messed up none the less. The movie crossed lines I didn't think would be crossed. I don't want to go too much into it in case you're planning to see it, most of what makes the movie so weird happens near the end.

Anyways here's my summary:
Clive & Elsa are two brilliant scientists working for a pharmaceutical company. The beginning of the movie shows the project they have been working on, combining all sorts of animal dna into one creature. They are doing this because this creature produces this protein they need that can help with livestock disease. They don't go too much into the science of it so it's really quite vague. Clive & Elsa want to go to the next level and mix in human dna to their next project, so that they can create products that could help with human genetic disease. Their company denies them of course because of all the moral and legal reasons but they do it anyways in secret. So they create this human and animal dna hybrid that's kinda creepy and kinda cute at the same time. They raise it from a baby and it grows really fast to an adult..that's when it starts to get weird and I will leave it at that..

I don't think I would watch it the movie second time, once was definitely enough but it was unique and I did enjoy it. Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley were excellent and I loved their on screen chemistry. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys sci-fi movies that make you say "what the fuck? Did they just go there?" Yes indeed they went there.

I give this movie a 7.5 out of 10

Dick Tracy ~ Review

Dick Tracy
Starring:
Warren Beatty
Madonna

In case you don't know what this movie is about: Dick Tracy a police detective is on a mission to stop the organized crime in the city. He can't nail any of the mobsters because he either lacks the evidence or the witnesses won't come forward. Meanwhile Tracy is trying to juggle his girlfriend and a street kid he rescues making his life pretty hectic. Dick Tracy eventually stops the bad guys and saves the day.

I hadn't seen this movie in years. I'm so glad I rented it because I forgot how much I love this movie. It is so much fun. Kind of a mash up between Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Sin City. It takes the silliness of Roger Rabbit and mixes it with the comic-book-esq style of Sin City. The casting, the wardrobe, the makeup are all really great and this movie is just plain fun.

I give this movie 8 tommy guns out of 10

Remember Me Review

Remember Me

Yeah, there's 113 minutes I'll never get back. It's just awful. Not only is the movie incredibly boring, with it's thin plot line and uninteresting characters, it's being advertised as a romance movie. It's not, not really. The movie has to do with 9/11 if you can believe that. Not that I have anything against movies about that, it's just this movie was so poorly done that it makes the whole situation laughable and you're better off watching another movie about this subject. So don't waste the money or your time.

Sincerely,

Recipe for Brooklyn's Finest

1 Washed Out Cop

1 Cop That Doesn't Believe In Contraceptives

1 Cop that's been undercover too long

1 Lady That Gives Women Everywhere A Bad Name

1 Character Recently Released From Prison Played By An Actor Recently Released From Prison

3 Easily preventable deaths

4 Hookers

Mix this all together and what do you get? A cop with too many kids attempting to steal dirty money while on the job so he can buy his family a new house. A cop that's had the lines blurred by being undercover so long he goes on a crazy revenge rampage when criminal friends gets killed. A cop that's been on the job so long he no longer gives a rat's ass about anyone until the very end when he finally saves some hookers, that he could have saved earlier on in the film but didn't because he can't care about anyone or anything. Your typical cop drama, not for me at all. However, the performances given by Don Cheadle, Wesley Snipes, Ellen Barkin, Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere were well done and the movie was well made. So for someone who likes cop dramas you'd probably enjoy this. Lines were well delivered and the plot didn't have holes all in all a success.
Rated: 7/10 for me, but this is kind of bias since this isn't a typical movie I would enjoy.

Dear Shutter Island

Dear Shutter Island,

I saw you last night with some friends and was thoroughly impressed by your characters, your plot, your suspense, your 50's fashion choices and the island setting. Now don't get me wrong when I say this, you were a little boring to me, I mean you had me sitting in that seat for over two hours.
You're generally not the type of movie I would see, I don't like it when you guys keep me guessing until the end, and I prefer it when you end with complete firm closure. Instead I found myself thinking about what your ending could mean. However, I can still appreciate you for what you were and I will recommend you to my friends, I will tell them you were 10 out of 10 and I will tell them you contain some aspects that were easy on the eyes (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo)

Sincerely
The Cat's Pajamas
